Why you should think twice before using air fresheners

air freshener

Air Fresheners contain allergens and potential carcinogens (acetaldehyde or styrene, as well as other substances such as toluene and chlorbenzene, glycol ethers, phthalates and artificial musk)

Air Fresheners don’t “purify” the air.  Instead, the coat the air and the inside of your nasal passageways. But in the end all they do is cover up the smell, and do a poor job at that.  “Now it smells like fish and roses!”

Air Fresheners contain Phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates).  “Studies involving rat and human subjects have suggested that high exposures to certain kinds of phthalates can cause cancer, developmental and sex-hormone abnormalities (including decreased testosterone and sperm levels and malformed sex organs) in infants, and can affect fertility. ” Time Magazine.

Air fresheners have little to no regulation:  According to Health Wyze, “The cleaning industry is self-regulated, which translates to no regulation. Chemical companies do not need permission from any authoritative body before releasing their latest air fresheners or cleanup wipes”

Air fresheners don’t support your health:  Essential oils smell great, but that’s only the tip of what they can do.   Essential oils can support your body systems including your immune and respiratory systems.  Essential oils can lift your mood, heighten your senses, and brighten your outlook.  Essential oils can boost your energy, focus your mind and sharpen your concentration.   Essential oils provide BALANCE.  But best of all, essential oils are natural and do not contain carcinogens.

room freshener

This is my favorite room freshening spray.  I keep it in the bathroom to freshen damp towels and just refresh the bathroom overall.  Yes, there are numerous poo poo sprays out there using oils but not everyone in the house is considerate enough to actually USE it.

I also use it to freshen the area around the catbox, to freshen the garbage area, to get rid of musty smells….it’s basically the spring cleaning of essential oils mixes.   You don’t have to use the baking soda but I find it helps to emulsify the oils.

Room Spray

1 cup distilled water

1/2 cup witch hazel (or vodka)

1 Tbsp baking soda

10 drops of your favorite essential oil, blend or recipe.

Helichrysum Essential Oil

Helichrysum

(Helichrysum italicum)

topical aromatic

Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) essential oil has a clarifying, stimulating, and grounding fragrance that makes it ideal to diffuse when studying or doing homework. Helichrysum can be applied topically to improve the appearance of tender skin. This oil includes the naturally occurring constituents neryl acetate, gamma-curcumene and alpha-pinene, and is an important ingredient in many essential oil blends including Awaken™, Brain Power™, Deep Relief™ Roll-On, Forgiveness™, PanAway® and Trauma Life™.

Read this excerpt from the Young Living blog dated 02/07/2015 for updates on a new Helichyrsym farm in Croatia!

On the helichrysum partnership in Croatia

“I recently went to Croatia and negotiated on farmland there. We entered into a partnership on the land where we’re already planting helichrysum. We have started growing the world’s first cultivated helichrysum in Croatia!”

Exciting stuff!

Helichrysum is a yellow flower that retains it’s color after picking and is therefore sometimes called immortelle or everlasting.   It is a rare and therefore very expensive oil but one that any serious oiler will want for their collection.   I highly recommend you sign up for Essential Rewards and use your free reward points to buy your bottle.

Wikipedia states that “Helichrysum italicum (synonym Helichrysum angustifolium) ….is popular in fragrance for its unique scent, best described as a mixture of burnt sugar and ham”.  I smell more of an earthy, warm, floral fragrance with hints of honey – it’s a very pleasing aroma!

How to use: For aromatic or topical use. Diffuse, inhale, or add to bath water. Apply to crown of head, back of neck, behind ears or inside wrists.
  1. Diffuse: Diffuse for it’s clarifying and grounding fragrance.
  2. Studying: Diffuse while studying, doing homework, or some other mentally rigorous task.
  3. Restoring:  Dilute and apply to skin to improve the appearance of tender skin.*

Ylang Ylang essential oil is sourced from a beautiful, drooping, yellow bloom found on the cananga tree.

Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) has a sweet, soft, flowery fragrance that has made it a romantic favorite. In Indonesia, the petals are often strewn across a marriage bed. Ylang ylang is extremely effective in calming and bringing about a sense of relaxation, and it may help with releasing feelings of anger, tension, and nervous irritability. It has a long history in skin and hair care products, particularly in Asia, where it is used to promote luxuriant hair.
